Wildlife Corridors and Climate Change in Montana
A newly published study highlights the importance of wildlife corridors for helping species survive the double threat of habitat loss and climate change in mountainous areas and issues an urgent call for more research.
Jodi Hilty, executive director of the Bozeman-based Wildlife Conservation Society North American Region, co-authored the paper, which shows how different areas of biological study have shown the importance of connected habitat in mountainous regions worldwide and how corridors could possibly counter the growing threat of climate change on species that depend on mountains for their survival.
“Single protected areas just aren't going to be big enough to sustain the biodiversity we care about, and it's really exacerbated by climate change. We need to find new approaches and we need to do conservation at (a large) scale, if we're going to be successful in the next century,” Hilty said.
