Our friends at Isle of Books are proud to host acclaimed Montana author (and Distinctly Montana contributor!) Russell Rowland for a special evening of storytelling and conversation on Friday, March 28th at 6:30 PM.
Rowland will be discussing his newest work, "BE A MAN: Raised in the Shadow of Cowboys" – a thoughtful memoir exploring what it means to grow up male in the American West. As a fourth-generation Montanan whose mother was raised on a cattle ranch in Southeastern Montana, Rowland brings an authentic perspective to this cultural examination.
The memoir delves into how his upbringing and that of his parents shaped their family's approach to challenging emotional issues including death, alcoholism, domestic violence, and personal failure. Rowland thoughtfully explores how media portrayals and Western history create a complex dynamic of mixed messages about masculinity – from how to treat women and handle conflict to navigating success and failure while forging one's own path.
As the author of six books, including the widely praised "Fifty-Six Counties," Rowland has established himself as an authentic voice of Montana, capturing the state's unique spirit through his writing. His honest, down-to-earth approach to storytelling promises to make this an engaging and thought-provoking event.
Best-selling author and fellow Montana native James Grady, creator of the CONDOR spy sagas, praises the memoir:
"Savvy author and journalist Russell Rowland's revealing memoir BE A MAN belongs on the shelf of anyone of any gender who cares about the culture of 'the West' and how that now impacts Americans everywhere. Rowland reveals truths and terrors behind the myths Americans are fed by movies and TV, myths and consequences that have impacted our lives in this 21st Century. This is a personal as well as a political and cultural exposure of how we all ended up where we are now, all told with Rowland's honest, savvy, critical yet loving eye."
