Forrest Fenn's Treasure

According to legend, the pirate Captain Kidd buried some of his treasure right on Long Island. But the search for hidden wealth stretches far and wide -- all to way out West. Our Cover Story is reported by Barry Petersen:

"Ever since I was a little kid," said Dal Neitzel, "I always wanted to go out and find treasure."

It is so much more than just a stroll in the Montana woods for Neitzel. "I read all those pirate magazines and comic books. And now I'm getting an opportunity to go out and look for one for real."

Like thousands of others in the Rocky Mountains this summer, he's here on a hunt for a treasure chest fit for a pirate -- filled with gold, precious metals, and ancient artifacts.

Its exact dollar value is not known. Some say a million, some say millions.

"I've been looking now for about five years," said Neitzel.

And is he getting discouraged by now? "No, there's nothing to get discouraged about!" he laughed.

This isn't some long-lost treasure. This is hidden treasure, placed somewhere in the Rockies by an eccentric millionaire five years ago. It's there for the taking if you can figure out the clues.

"I believe that his secret place is a place where there is some kind of running water," said Neitzel.

On this day the clues have taken him to a lake near Yellowstone National Park. The last clue is about a blaze -- maybe that's something on a rock -- and maybe Dal is just steps away from life-changing wealth.

Or, maybe not.

Painted Pony And One Cool Dude

By SuzAnne Miller

Suzanne MillerSuzAnne Miller is the owner of Dunrovin Ranch. A fourth-generation Montanan, SuzAnne grew up roaming the mountains and fishing the streams of western Montana. Her love of nature, animals, science, and education prompted her to create the world’s first cyber ranch where live web cameras bring Dunrovin’s wildlife and ranch life to internet users across the globe.

Cool Dude is exactly that – one very cool dude who is a favorite of all the children that he meets. Sturdy enough to carry a small adult, his short stature and easy going, slow moving personality inspires confidence among new riders of any age.

Ponies are famous for their independent ways, sturdy bodies, lazy natures, and willful dispositions. Cool Dude fits the “pony bill” in that he can be lazy. He can also be stubborn and cantankerous with the other members of the herd. He can be uncooperative. But unlike many other ponies, Dunrovin’s Cool Dude is always kind. He is always careful with his riders. He never offers resistance or misbehaves. He is always patient with little hands that paint him, groom him, apply hoof polish, braid his tail and mane, or pull his mane in a struggle to mount him.

He frequently gives rides to small adults as well as children. Many foreign students form Asia visit Dunrovin while attending the University of Montana, and he is a perfect fit for those who have never even seen a horse before. In fact, one of Cool Dude’s most memorable guest riders was a woman from Japan, Shigeko Sasamori. As a 13 year old school girl, Shigeko survived the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima City. Please read her story about surviving and her joyful ride with Cool Dude.

If you have an iPhone, you have an impressive collection of photographs you’ve taken with it. Get creative with these “best of” apps to create water colors from your favorites. It’s one of the best ways to chill out on a night when you just need to rest and regroup.

Why not just use the Photos app on your iPhone? If you want to turn your photos into real works of printable, framable art, you need to go beyond a standard filter. By the way, you don’t need to be inherently artistic. Maybe you would never pick up a brush and try to paint a water color.

The following apps make it simple to create a masterpiece in minutes from the archive of photographs on your iPhone or iPad. Look these up on the iTunes app store and give them a try: Glaze, Popsicolor, Brushstroke and Repix. Each gives you slightly different tools. Trying out the same photo in each allows you to get familiar with what that App has to offer.

If you have an image with a lot of detail, apping it can help you to simplify, focusing on a particular part or aspect of the photograph, removing the background and making the foreground more subtle. You can app a photo so that it looks like a new image. Smooth out surfaces; add texture and fun objects, like a bird, or random dandelion fairy-seeds. Create a retro look. When you combine apps, you’ll get a completely unique look.

Allow yourself to play, just play, and see what happens. Enjoy the process, the relaxed, almost meditative nature of it. For inspiration, check out the iPhone gallery at sandranykerk.com.

You may end up with an image that looks like a water color or art print. That’s especially fun when you print to different textures of paper.

As you gather a portfolio of images you want to show off, consider setting up changeable displays on the walls of your living or work space. Create your own collage wall by choosing varied sizes of frames that share a theme or color. Or go for the gusto with Collagewall, a product available at F-11 Photographic Supplies. It beautifully displays varied sizes of images printed to metal and makes it simple to trade them out whenever you have something new and awesome to add. Apped photos can be submitted for printing just like a “regular” image.

Who knew you could have so much fun with your images?
