Lewis & Clark Festival Float Trip: Moroney Dam Trip -- GREAT FALLS -- June 21st

June 21st

The Missouri River/Moroney Dam full day float covers many Lewis and Clark Expedition sites not accessible any other way. We will leave the Lewis and Clark interpretive Center at 8 a.m. sharp, for our trip by bus to Moroney Dam. Following a safety briefing and fitting with life jackets, we will depart in large and safe inflatable rafts guided by seasoned professionals from Montana River Outfitters. We will push off for our 18-mile float down the primitive Missouri, looking much as it did in 1805. Our first stop will be near the Sulfur Springs, the very source of the water used to restore an ailing Sacagawea to health on June 16, 1805. After a short ¼ mile walk, we will view the springs and listen to a brief narration by our guide. A little further down the river we will pass the mouth of Portage Creek, followed by the large cascade that prevented Lewis and Clark from floating their heavily-laden canoes upriver. A little further and we arrive at Lower Portage Camp. After a brief visit we continue downstream past Clark’s June 15, 1805 campsite. We stop for a riverside picnic lunch at a spot complete with picnic tables and an outdoor toilet. After lunch we’ll pass by the mouth of Strawberry, or Shields River. Then it’s on to Black Coulee and Lewis’ June 12, 1805 campsite. Just across the river and downstream a little way is Clark’s June 14, 1805 campsite, followed by Clark’s Tower which he noted on his way upriver to meet Lewis. Our expedition ends at Carter’s Ferry, one of the last of three operating free vehicle ferries in Montana. We will return by approximately 5:00 p.m.
