Tax collector, soldier, author Miguel de Cervantes and his man, Sancho, are cast into the prison common room by the Spanish Inquisition because they foreclosed on a church in default with its taxes. The thieves and robbers in the prison are quick to descent upon the new arrivals and ravish their possessions.
Cervantes concedes everything but a carefully wrapped package of papers that he begs of the prisoners he should be allowed to win back by convincing them that it is of value only to himself. Together with Sancho they band together to tell the story.
