9-17 RED LODGE Music Festival The Red Lodge Music Festival is the oldest and most successful music festival in Montana serving nearly 200 students annually and presenting live performances by 30 professional musicians to audiences that would not otherwise have access to such opportunities. What began in 1964 as a week-long camp has expanded to a full-blown, nine day music festival. Students rehearse and perform under the tutelage of professional performers chosen not only for their expertise on their instruments, but also for their enthusiasm in working with students involved in instrumental music. Because of the high quality of faculty performances, the concerts are taped for later broadcast over regional and national public radio, bringing Red Lodge to national attention. Five evening faculty concerts, three student recitals, and a final band and orchestra performance complete a worthwhile and memorable festival experience for student campers, faculty members, and festival audiences. Even though most students will probably not pursue music careers, their involvement in the Red Lodge Music Festival develops their appreciation and enjoyment of music for the rest of their lives. The year 2007 will mark the 44th Annual Red Lodge Music Festival. More Information: 406-252-4599

9 GLENDIVE Buzzard Day Each spring, Makoshika State Park celebrates the return of the turkey vulture to eastern Montana with Buzzard Day, a tongue-in-cheek day of appreciation for one of “nature’s cleaners.” Makoshika’s badlands topography provides excellent habitat for turkey vultures, a species of concern because of its breeding requirements and its position in the food chain (carrion eaters ingest toxins carried throughout the entire food chain). Buzzard Day has events for all age groups, including a pancake breakfast, nature walks, an 8K Buzzard Run, festival games and food. Each year, new events are added. Admission is free. For more information, contact Makoshika State Park, PO Box 1242, Glendive, MT 59330, 406-377-6256 or email makoshika@mt.gov.

Drawing participants from the region and from neighboring states, this event is free to all. Families, friends, neighbors and colleagues meet and enjoy all the ethnic flavor that it is possible to absorb in a single day. As folk music drifts over the crowd or Basque dancers spin and twirl between the laughing members of the audience, each of us begins to see the world through a wider lens. Wander through the ethnic crafts, eating a Laotian egg roll or sipping Italian coffee and then tour the 3,000 works of art on display in the Cultural Talent Demonstration. Children’s cultural activities abound in every area and they are free to all our young guests. Our entertainment stage is busy nonstop with music, dancing and story-telling.
